The fresh or dried fruits of different capsicum species are used medicinally. Capsicum oleoresin is prepared by extracting the cmshed capsicum with volatile solvents by percolation method. Methyl salicylate, menthol and camphor are originally derived from plants. Methyl salicylate is derived from oil of wintergreen, menthol is derived from mint and camphor is derived from a number of plants including Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Cedar. It is available as- muscle rub for tropical use.

Comp: Each gm muscle rub contains 1-Menthol 25.40mg, d-camphor 14.30mg, methyl salicylate 4.20mg and Oleoresin capsicum 0.05mg.

Ind: Muscle pain, sprains, strains and sports injuries, headache, bruising, fibrositis, neuralgia, pain due to herpes zoster, osteoarthritis C/I: Capsicum preparations are contraindicated for application on injured skin, allergies to aspirin, allergic inflammation of skin, eczema, itchy rash and near the eyes.

S/E: In rare cases hypersensitivity reaction may occur. Inhalation of medicine may cause bronch- oconstriction.

Precautions: Avoid use on broken or inflammed skin, eyes and the mucous membranes. Rinse with cold water if accidental contact occurs. Do not cover immediately after application. Wash the hands thoroughly after application. If itching or irritation occurs discontinue it.

Pregnancy & lactation: There is no information available about restriction of this medicine during pregnancy and lactation. May be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks of fetus.

Dosage & admin: Adult: Clean the affected

area. Apply a small amount of Torel muscle rub (an amount equal to the surface area of the tip of a finger) 3 to 4 times daily or as directed by the physician.

Children under 6 years of age: Not to be used. Drug inter: None.
